Man Utd Beat Brentford to Edge Closer to Champions League Return

Manchester United moved within touching distance of a return to the UEFA Champions League after a 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford. First-half goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko proved enough for Michael Carrick’s side in an entertaining Premier League clash.

The Red Devils now need just two more points from their final four league matches to confirm a top-four finish and secure their place back among Europe’s elite next season.

United made a strong start and opened the scoring after 11 minutes. Harry Maguire headed the ball back across goal from a set-piece, allowing Casemiro to nod home from a tight angle for his latest important contribution in midfield.

Bruno Fernandes then continued his outstanding campaign by registering his 19th Premier League assist of the season, leaving him just one short of the competition record. The Portugal playmaker surged forward before slipping a perfectly weighted pass to Sesko, who finished confidently three minutes before half-time for his 11th goal of the season.

Brentford, however, created several opportunities and will regret their wastefulness in front of goal. Igor Thiago missed multiple first-half chances, while Dango Ouattara struck the post from close range in the second half.

The visitors eventually found a breakthrough in the 87th minute when Mathias Jensen fired a powerful strike beyond Senne Lammens. Brentford pushed for a dramatic equaliser late on, but Mikkel Damsgaard’s header was comfortably saved by the United goalkeeper.

The defeat damages Brentford’s hopes of qualifying for Europe for the first time and extends their winless run to seven matches in all competitions.

For Manchester United, the result underlined their strong finish to the season following Ruben Amorim’s departure in January. Carrick has steadied the side, and the midfield partnership of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo again impressed with balance, control and composure.

Fernandes remains central to United’s success and is now firmly in the conversation for Player of the Year after another decisive display.

Manchester United next face Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, while Brentford host West Ham in a London derby as both clubs enter a crucial stage of the campaign.
