Spurs’ Xavi Simons Out for Season and World Cup After ACL Injury

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Xavi Simons has been ruled out for the remainder of the season and will also miss the 2026 World Cup after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

The Netherlands international was stretchered off during Spurs’ crucial 1-0 Premier League win over Wolves on Saturday after colliding with defender Hugo Bueno.

Tottenham later confirmed the severity of the injury, stating Simons would undergo surgery in the coming weeks before beginning a lengthy rehabilitation process.

The 23-year-old admitted he was devastated by the setback.

“They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way,” Simons wrote on social media.

“My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it. Honestly, I’m heartbroken.”

ACL injuries typically require between six and nine months of recovery, ending Simons’ hopes of representing the Netherlands at this summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Dutch side begin their Group F campaign against Japan on 14 June.

“All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me… along with the World Cup,” Simons added.

Simons joined Tottenham from RB Leipzig for £52 million last summer and has made 28 Premier League appearances this season, contributing two goals and five assists.

His absence is a major blow for Spurs, who remain in the relegation zone despite beating Wolves. Tottenham are two points from safety with four matches remaining.

The London club are also battling a growing injury list, with Dominic Solanke, Ben Davies, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Wilson Odobert and Cristian Romero all unavailable.

Huge Blow for Spurs Survival Fight

Simons has been one of Tottenham’s most influential attacking players this season. His creativity, movement and ability to link midfield with attack have often lifted Spurs in difficult matches.

Recent statistics underline his importance, with Tottenham averaging more goals and winning a higher percentage of league games when he starts.

With fixtures against Aston Villa, Chelsea, Leeds United and Everton still to come, Spurs now face a survival battle without one of their most dynamic players.
