Big decisions ahead at Man Utd despite UCL push
All but back in Champions League – yet big decisions loom at Man Utd
Manchester United are on the verge of returning to the Champions League, but the mood around Old Trafford remains one of major transition rather than celebration.
A 2-1 win over Brentford has left United just two points away from securing a top-four finish, with four games remaining. Only a collapse combined with perfect runs from rivals would now prevent their qualification.
Casemiro’s influence – and looming exit
Casemiro once again played a decisive role, scoring and controlling key moments in midfield as fans chanted for him to stay.
The Brazilian, however, is expected to leave at the end of the season, with manager Michael Carrick acknowledging his departure is “pretty clear from both sides.”
“He has huge experience and given everything you can possibly give. But it’s football. Players come and go,” Carrick said.
Replacing Casemiro is now viewed as United’s top priority this summer.
Midfield rebuild at the centre of plans

Nottingham Forest’s Elliott Anderson is understood to be a leading target, though United are determined not to overspend and will move on if valuations exceed their internal limits.
The club’s recruitment strategy is shifting toward flexibility, avoiding drawn-out negotiations and instead maintaining multiple options for each position.
This marks a clear change from previous transfer windows, where long pursuits often ended unsuccessfully.
Squad evolution and depth issues
United also believe the squad needs significant expansion to handle an increasingly demanding schedule.
Some players, including Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, are seen as limited in availability, while others such as Ayden Heaven are expected to play bigger roles next season.
The Carrick dilemma
Perhaps the biggest decision remains the future of Carrick himself.
Appointed on an interim basis, he has guided United back into top-four contention, sparking debate inside the club over whether he deserves the job full-time.
However, concerns remain about appointing him permanently, with fears of repeating past managerial cycles if results dip next season.
Alternative candidates are limited. Luis Enrique is expected to remain at Paris Saint-Germain, while other top options such as Julian Nagelsmann are considered difficult due to contract and timing issues.
Andoni Iraola is admired but viewed as a risk due to his lack of experience at an elite club.
Crucial summer ahead
With Champions League football almost secured, United’s focus is already shifting to recruitment and leadership decisions that could define the next era of the club.
The feeling at Old Trafford is clear: qualification is just the beginning of a much bigger rebuilding project.
