Arsenal ‘short on numbers’ despite £123m spend – Arteta

Mikel Arteta has admitted Arsenal are “short on numbers” and will look to strengthen their squad further this summer, despite already spending around £123.5m in the transfer market.

The Gunners have secured deals for Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard and Noni Madueke as Arteta reshapes his side ahead of another Premier League title challenge.

Arsenal remain in negotiations over a £63.5m move for Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres and are also working on a deal for Valencia’s promising defender Cristhian Mosquera.

Arteta: “We need more depth and quality”

Speaking in Singapore, where Arsenal are preparing to face AC Milan and Newcastle United in pre-season, Arteta admitted there is more work to do.

“In terms of numbers, we are short and we have to improve the depth and quality of the squad,” Arteta said.

“There’s still a long time in the window and we are seeking still. Until that happens, we focus on the players we have – and I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen in the last 10-15 days.”

The Gunners will also play Tottenham Hotspur in Hong Kong to wrap up their Asia tour.

Arteta hinted new signings could join the squad on tour, saying:

“When we have something concrete to offer in any case to any player, we will do that. New faces bring new excitement and energy – we signed very important players as well.

“Everybody feels the heights have to go to a different level and that’s what we are seeking.”
