Team Dubois to hold ‘inquest’ after fight-night gathering before Usyk defeat
Daniel Dubois’ camp has confirmed plans for an “internal inquest” after reports emerged of a “gathering” at the heavyweight’s home just hours before his defeat to Oleksandr Usyk at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
The 27-year-old Londoner arrived at the venue less than two hours before his ring walk, before suffering a fifth-round stoppage as Usyk, 38, reclaimed the undisputed heavyweight crown.
A video surfaced online showing a reported gathering at Dubois’ house on fight night. While trainer Don Charles admitted the event took place, he insisted it was “a gathering, not a party” and denied claims it unsettled the fighter.
“This gathering is the same gathering which was used for the AJ fight day preparation. People praised Daniel’s confidence for that bout,” Charles told BBC Sport, referencing Dubois’ shock victory over Anthony Joshua last September.
‘Questions will be asked’
Promoter Frank Warren and his son George are expected to hold talks with Dubois’ team to review fight-night events.
“There’s a meeting pending. We’ll hold an internal inquest on what happened. Questions will be asked,” Charles confirmed.
There are unverified reports suggesting the gathering was organised by Dubois’ father and claims the boxer went for a short drive during the event. Charles rejected suggestions this was a sign of distress.
“Daniel went for a drive, like you do. If he wanted to get fresh air, it’s not unusual,” he added.
It’s also alleged members of Dubois’ entourage were refused entry at Wembley, causing his late arrival.
“I had 90 minutes to prepare him, and I didn’t see a fighter unsettled,” said Charles. “He seemed the Daniel Dubois I know from the gym.”
‘Went out on his sword’
Usyk knocked down Dubois twice in round five, ending the fight as the Briton failed to beat the count.
Dubois has faced past criticism for quitting in losses to Joe Joyce and Usyk in 2023, but Charles defended his fighter.
“He went out on his sword. I’d already thrown in the towel. I want him to live to fight another day,” Charles said.
Despite defeat, Charles praised Usyk as “an all-time great” and confirmed Dubois remains determined to bounce back.
