Raducanu Pushes Sabalenka to the Limit in Cincinnati Thriller

Raducanu Narrowly Beaten by Sabalenka in Cincinnati Epic

Emma Raducanu came within inches of a statement win at the Cincinnati Open, but the British No.1 was edged out 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 7-6 (7-5) by world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in a match that lasted over three hours.

The 22-year-old, who also pushed Sabalenka hard at Wimbledon, once again showed she can test the very best as her resurgence continues. With her fitness issues largely behind her, Raducanu has climbed back into the world’s top 40 and could be seeded for the US Open, giving her a more favourable draw.

Signs of Raducanu’s Return to Her Best

Raducanu impressed with a composed baseline game and a reliable serve, taking advantage of a below-par Sabalenka. Guided by new coach Francisco Roig – a long-time member of Rafael Nadal’s coaching team – Raducanu received tactical advice and positive reinforcement throughout.

The Brit’s improved mental resilience was on full display in the deciding set when she saved four break points and battled through 12 deuces to hold serve in a 22-minute game.

Sabalenka’s Tie-Break Dominance Prevails

Despite winning three fewer points overall, Sabalenka’s exceptional tie-break record proved decisive. The defending champion extended her Open era record to 16 consecutive tie-break wins in WTA singles, sealing victory in the deciding set.

Sabalenka praised her opponent after the match:

“I can see she is getting back to her best. I enjoy fighting against her – she’s an incredible player.”

What’s Next for Raducanu

While this defeat means Raducanu has now won just three of her 17 matches against top-10 opponents – and is still seeking her first victory over a top-four player – her form suggests a breakthrough could come soon.

With the US Open just weeks away, Raducanu will look to channel this performance into a deep run at the Grand Slam she famously won as a qualifier in 2021.
