Konaté Nears New Liverpool Deal Amid Contract Talks

Ibrahima Konate has revealed he is close to agreeing a new contract with Liverpool FC, stating there is a “big chance” he will remain at Anfield beyond this season.

The French centre-back, whose current deal expires this summer, confirmed that negotiations with the club are progressing well and have been ongoing for some time.

“We have spoken with the club for a long time and we are close to an agreement,” Konaté said after Liverpool’s Merseyside derby win.

Commitment to Liverpool Clear

Konaté made it clear his intention has always been to stay, suggesting he communicated that stance early in discussions with sporting director Richard Hughes.

  • “There is a big chance I’m here next season.”
  • “This is what I’ve always wanted.”

The 26-year-old has been a key figure since joining from RB Leipzig in 2021, making over 100 Premier League appearances and contributing to multiple trophies.

Contract Delays Not Unusual at Anfield

The defender also addressed why talks have extended into April, pointing to similar situations involving teammates such as Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

He suggested that delayed negotiations have become part of the club’s approach in recent seasons.

Challenging Season On and Off the Pitch

Konaté admitted the campaign has been difficult personally, following the passing of his father earlier this year.

Despite this, he returned early from compassionate leave to support the team during a defensive injury crisis—highlighting his commitment to the club.

“If people knew everything, they would understand the sacrifices I’ve made for this club,” he said.

Liverpool Target Strong Finish

While Arne Slot’s side are likely to secure Champions League qualification, Konaté acknowledged the season has fallen below expectations.

  • Liverpool currently sit in the top five
  • Seven points clear of sixth place
  • On course for Champions League return

“If we finish in the top four, we won’t be happy,” Konaté added.

Conclusion

With negotiations nearing completion, Konaté’s renewal would provide a major boost for Liverpool’s defensive stability ahead of next season.

After a challenging year, both player and club appear aligned on building a stronger future together.
