Garcia Apologises After Masters Club Incident
Former Masters champion Sergio Garcia has issued a public apology after smashing his driver in frustration during the final round of the The Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club.
The incident occurred on the par-five second hole, where Garcia—playing alongside compatriot Jon Rahm—reacted angrily after finding a bunker. The Spaniard slammed his club into the turf before striking a nearby cooler, snapping the head off his driver.
Garcia Issues Public Apology
Garcia later took to social media to express regret over his actions.
“I want to apologise for my actions on Sunday at the Masters tournament,” he said.
“I regret the way I acted. It has no place in our game.”
The 2017 champion emphasised his respect for the tournament, its traditions, and the global golfing community.
Consequences During the Round
Due to the damage being caused in anger, Garcia was not permitted to replace the club, forcing him to continue the round without a driver.
Officials, including competition committee chairman Geoff Yang, issued a formal code-of-conduct warning early in the round.
Garcia went on to post a three-over-par 75, finishing at eight over for the tournament—placing near the bottom of those who made the cut.
McIlroy Claims Historic Victory
While Garcia endured a difficult final round, Rory McIlroy secured the title, making history with back-to-back victories at Augusta.
The win further cemented McIlroy’s legacy among golf’s elite, as he joined a select group of players to successfully defend the Masters title.
