Sessegnon Strike Keeps Fulham’s European Push Alive with Villa Win
Ryan Sessegnon’s decisive strike earned Fulham a crucial 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Craven Cottage, keeping Marco Silva’s side firmly in the race for European qualification.
The result moves Fulham up to 10th in the Premier League table, leaving them just two points behind sixth-placed Brighton as the battle for European places intensifies.
Sessegnon, who recently signed a contract extension with the club, reacted quickest to score from the rebound after Emiliano Martinez saved Sasa Lukic’s header late in the first half.
Fulham also had a second-half goal disallowed when Timothy Castagne’s header was ruled out for a foul on the Villa goalkeeper.
Villa had their chances, with Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers both missing opportunities in a frustrating afternoon for Unai Emery’s side, who struggled to impose themselves in the final third.
Emery’s team now turn their attention to their Europa League semi-final first leg against Nottingham Forest before returning to Premier League action.
Despite the defeat, Villa remain in a strong position in the top-five race, but missed the chance to strengthen their grip on Champions League qualification.
Fulham manager Marco Silva praised his team’s resilience, particularly in defence, as they held firm during sustained Villa pressure in the second half.
Captain Joachim Andersen delivered a standout performance, leading the defensive effort with key tackles, interceptions and clearances as Fulham secured a valuable clean sheet.
The only concern for the hosts was Sessegnon’s second-half injury, which forced the match-winner off before full time.
Fulham now face a challenging run-in, including fixtures against Arsenal and Bournemouth, as they continue their push for European football next season.
Villa, meanwhile, will look to respond quickly with a busy schedule ahead as they balance domestic and European ambitions.
