Hatton family hail fan support after Ricky’s death

The family of boxing legend Ricky Hatton have described the overwhelming public support following his death as a “blessing,” despite the difficulty of grieving in the public eye.

Hatton, a former world champion in two weight divisions, passed away last September aged 46. His funeral saw thousands line the streets from Hyde to Manchester Cathedral in a powerful tribute.

Campbell Hatton reflects on emotional response

His son, Campbell Hatton, said the family has struggled with the lack of privacy but has been deeply moved by the kindness of fans:

“We’ve not been able to grieve with any privacy… but if there’s a positive, it’s people checking up on us. That’s the blessing behind it.”

He added that seeing the scale of support during the funeral procession was overwhelming, with crowds lining the entire route for hours.

Tribute event planned at Manchester Arena

A special memorial event, Evening4Ricky, will take place at Manchester Arena on 7 June.

The event aims to celebrate Hatton’s life and career rather than focus on loss, with Campbell saying:

“It’s going to be a celebration and a party… a great night.”

Many figures from the boxing world are expected to attend, reflecting Hatton’s lasting impact on the sport.

Continuing a legacy through mental health support

Proceeds from the event will support the Ricky Hatton Foundation, established shortly after his death to focus on mental health awareness and support.

Hatton had long spoken openly about his own struggles, including battles with addiction and mental health challenges following his retirement.

Campbell emphasized the importance of continuing that work:

“It’s a problem that’s not going to go anywhere unless we do something about it.”

He also shared his own experiences, highlighting the difficulty—but importance—of seeking help and speaking openly.

A lasting impact beyond boxing

Remembered not only for his achievements in the ring but also for his honesty and advocacy, Ricky Hatton’s legacy continues through both his family and the wider boxing community.

The upcoming event in Manchester is expected to be a powerful tribute to a fighter whose influence extended far beyond sport.
