Nelly Korda Equals Chevron Record But Lead Cut to Five
World number two Nelly Korda equalled the Chevron Championship 54-hole scoring record but saw her advantage trimmed to five shots heading into the final round of the LPGA major.
The American star carded a third-round 70 at Memorial Park in Houston to move to 16-under-par after opening with back-to-back rounds of 65. Despite maintaining control of the tournament, Korda’s overnight six-shot lead was reduced by one stroke on Saturday.
Korda made a flying start with four birdies in her first six holes and looked set to extend her dominance. However, the 27-year-old struggled for consistency on the greens during the remainder of the round and failed to add another birdie.
“The front nine was great,” Korda said after her round.
“Just got to reset and hopefully it goes my way tomorrow.”
A victory on Sunday would secure Korda’s second Chevron Championship title in three seasons and could also send her back to number one in the world rankings after current top-ranked Jeeno Thitikul missed the cut.
Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit remains Korda’s closest challenger after posting a third-round 69 to move to 11-under-par. Tavatanakit recorded her first bogey of the tournament on the 13th hole but still gained a shot on the leader.
France’s Pauline Bouchard and China’s Yin Ruoning sit one further shot back at 10-under. Yin delivered one of the standout performances of the day with a bogey-free 66, matching the lowest round of Saturday.
Korda’s three-round total of 200 equals the tournament record set by Jennifer Kupcho in 2022, when she also led after 54 holes before going on to claim the title.
England’s Charley Hull is tied at five-under, while rising amateur talent Lottie Woad is four-under entering the final round.
All eyes now turn to Sunday as Korda looks to convert her commanding position into another major championship triumph.
