Union Berlin Appoint First Female Head Coach

Union Berlin have made history by appointing Marie-Louise Eta as interim head coach, making her the first woman to lead a men’s team in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

The 34-year-old takes charge until the end of the season following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart, after a disappointing run of results in the Bundesliga.

Historic Appointment in European Football

Eta’s promotion marks a significant milestone in football history. She previously became the Bundesliga’s first female assistant coach in 2023 and also made headlines by leading the team from the touchline during a league match in 2024.

Her appointment now sets a new benchmark, breaking long-standing barriers in men’s professional football at the highest level.

Challenging Situation at Union Berlin

Union Berlin currently sit mid-table but remain under pressure after winning just two of their last 14 league matches in 2026.

The club’s sporting director emphasized the need for change, citing a lack of confidence in recent performances and the urgency to secure safety before the end of the campaign.

Eta acknowledged the difficulty of the task but expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to respond.

Strong Support from Club and Fans

The decision has been met with overwhelming positivity, both within the club and among supporters.

Her previous work with the youth team and familiarity with the club’s structure have been key factors in earning trust for this crucial role.

A Trailblazer in Modern Football

Before stepping into this role, Eta built an impressive profile as a coach and former player, including success in European women’s football.

Her appointment follows a gradual shift in the game, with figures such as Corinne Diacre and Hannah Dingley previously taking roles in men’s football, though not at this elite level.

Focus on Survival

With only a handful of matches remaining, Eta’s immediate objective is clear: secure the points required to keep Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.

Her leadership will now be closely watched, not only for its sporting impact but also for its broader significance in football history.
