Powell & Lyles Unite to Help Jamaica Hurricane Victims

Powell and Lyles Helping Jamaica Hurricane Victims After Category-Five Disaster

Two of the world’s most accomplished sprinters — Asafa Powell and Noah Lyles — are leading relief efforts in Jamaica following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa, which struck the island in October, killing at least 28 people.

The hurricane, classified as a Category Five storm, left behind significant destruction across the Caribbean nation. Powell, a former 100m world record holder and Olympic champion, currently resides in Kingston, where he’s been on the ground aiding some of the worst-hit areas.

“My heart was just overwhelmed with sadness,” Powell told BBC World Service.

“When you see mothers with babies or people who can’t even shower… it will make you cry.”

Noah Lyles Joins Hands Across Borders

Noah Lyles, who won the 100m gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and is a four-time world 200m champion, joined forces with Powell to deliver direct aid, including donated housing for displaced families.

“Last week, I gave two houses [to families in need]. They were very happy… My wife actually cried and the families cried,” Powell said.

“These are the people who cheer us on. To give back makes me want to do more.”

Despite the on-track rivalry between the U.S. and Jamaica, Powell emphasized how sport is now bridging national divides in service of humanity and recovery.

Long-Term Commitment Urged

Powell has called on major global organizations to sustain support beyond the initial wave of headlines and media attention.

“I’m going to keep helping every month. Big organisations should stay in it for the long run and make sure everyone is back in their home,” he urged.

“Every day I see another flood or disaster. There’s a lot of people to help, but I’ll keep doing my part.”
