Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies says Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 future will not be influenced by the planned departure of long-time race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase.

Lambiase, who has worked closely with Verstappen since the Dutch driver joined Red Bull in 2016, is set to leave the team and become McLaren’s chief racing officer by 2028 at the latest.

Despite the close relationship between the pair, Mekies insisted the move would not impact Verstappen’s thinking about staying in Formula 1.

“Absolutely not,” Mekies said when asked if Lambiase’s exit could affect Verstappen’s future.

He added that Verstappen understands the inner workings of the team and remains fully aware of how personnel changes happen in top-level motorsport.

Verstappen has openly voiced concerns this season about the new hybrid engine regulations, particularly the balance between combustion and electric power, which he believes has reduced driving enjoyment.

Mekies said rule tweaks introduced for the Miami Grand Prix are a positive first step and should improve the on-track experience for drivers.

Red Bull have endured a difficult opening to the campaign, with Verstappen sitting ninth in the standings after three races, his best finish being sixth.

The team will bring a major upgrade package to Miami, hoping to reduce the performance gap to early leaders Mercedes.

Mekies admitted Red Bull still have work to do on both chassis and engine performance, but believes progress has been made.
